About the Music Collection

The Music Collection at Oakland Public Library is located at the Main Library in downtown Oakland:

The Oakland Public Library houses over 13,000 circulating music scores, including:

  • Chamber music performing scores/parts
  • Solo instrumental & vocal repertoire
  • Instructional methods
  • Play-along CDs with accompanying scores
  • Full and miniature/study scores
  • Piano/vocal scores for operas, musicals, sacred and popular music
  • Choral Music Collection  – sacred, secular and holiday choral octavos
  • Hymnals

Non-circulating songbooks and sheet music collections:

  • Popular songbook collection is known throughout Northern California. This collection of songbooks does not circulate. Copies can be made in the library. Although a song index is available, most of this collection can also be searched in the online catalog by songbook title or song title.

Sound Recordings:

  • CDs: OPL has over 20,000 CDs system-wide, the largest collection is located at the Main Library, with over 9,000 CDs. New CDs are added to the collection continuously.
  • Hoopla – Stream or download movies, full music albums, ebooks, eAudiobooks, and graphic novels with hoopla.
  • Vinyl LP recordings: this collection is comprised of over 1900 albums.  Although not a browsable collection, the entire archival collection is searchable in the online catalog. For a listing by genre, click here.  LPs are no longer purchased or added to the collection.
